Lu Olo to campaign in Dili tomorrow

A bigger than expected crowd of 10,000 people rallied in Oecussi today (Tuesday) in support of presidential candidate Francisco Guterres Lu Olo as the Timor-Leste (East Timor) election campaign entered its final week.

The Fretilin-backed Lu Olo campaign shifts to the capital Dili tomorrow with a rally at Kampu Motocross Delta Manleuana on the western edge of the city at 10am. He will hold his final rally in Atauro on Thursday.

Lu Olo has so far attracted crowds totalling around 80,000 – far more than any other candidate.

Fretilin today congratulated its supporters for conducting a generally peaceful campaign.

“We appeal to our members to continue to campaign in a peaceful way and to try to ignore provocations. We call on other political parties to make the same public appeal to their members,” Arsenio Bano, member of Fretilin’s Central Committee and National Political Commission, told a Dili media conference.

Bano confirmed that a man armed with a slingshot and steel “Ambon arrows” was seized by Fretilin supporters and handed over to police at Lu Olo’s rally in Suai last Saturday.
